GRB Position Paper on Review of ecodesign and energy labelling requirements for lighting products

The European railway sector is fully committed to develop a sustainable and energy efficient railway system by deploying energy efficient measures and energy efficient products. However, the European railway sector is concerned about the envisaged ban of the placing on the market of fluorescent tube T8 lamps in the European Union by 2020 as such a short transition period is not consistent with the sustainability goals of the railway sector. The European railway sector fears that it would go against the intended energy savings and reduction of emissions while causing an important economic burden to the railway sector.

Digitalisation is ever more present in all aspects of life, and offers enormous opportunities and challenges. The rail sector, as the backbone of transport in Europe, is not new to the digital age, and is today intensifying its use of digital technologies in order to match the pace and scope of digitalisation in the wider transport chain and to adapt to customer expectations on safety, security, punctuality, capacity, transparency, and information availability. Intense and constructive cooperation of the rail sector with the European Commission is key to accelerate this process.

Future Railway Mobile Communication System – EIM expectations and key challenges

GSM-R is the current technology used by the railway industry for its radio mobile communications. End of life of GSM-R is expected around 2030 based on a GSM-R Industry Group announcement. Furthermore, some IMs are running older version of GSM-R which will need a major replacement by as early as 2023. It is therefore essential that the successor to GSM-R is available within a short time frame.
