PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. (PLK) – Polish railway infrastructure manager – is modernizing the Warsaw West Railway Station. It is one of the largest railway investments implemented in Poland. The implementation of the project will improve the comfort of passenger service in the capital of Poland. The rebuilt station will be more accessible to people with reduced mobility, will be adapted to the growing needs of passengers and will increase the role of railways in the transport system of the capital, agglomeration and the country. The investment worth approx. PLN 2 billion net is co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment (OPI&E).
Warsaw West is the largest railway station in Poland in terms of the number of trains running. On average, around 1,000 agglomeration, regional, national and international long-distance trains pass through the station daily. The reconstruction of West Warsaw is the next stage of the modernization of the cross-city line in the capital of Poland – a very important route in the entire transport system of the country.
All platforms will be roofed. There will be escalators and lifts adapted to transport trolleys and bicycles. The station will be fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. Clear signage and a passenger information system will facilitate the use of railways. An additional platform from the side of Tunnelowa St. will increase the possibility of running more trains. Communication in the station area will be facilitated by a footbridge that connects Wola and Ochota districts. The underground passage will completely change – it will be higher, wider and connected with the space of waiting rooms and ticket offices. The passage will also be extended to platform 8 at the perimeter line.
During the reconstruction of Warsaw West station, train traffic is maintained. Travelers use long-distance and regional trains. Daily and occasional travels are possible.
Contractor, Budimex S.A. company currently works at platforms 6 and 7. The old facilities were pulled down. A new tunnel and a technical building are under construction. A new footbridge is being installed which will be supported on 10 pillars. The footbridge with ramps will be 432 meters long.
The investment is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
