Norway is in the forefront worldwide in the implementation of a digital signalling system for the entire railway. In one year, the first new line with the European standard for train signalling, ERTMS, will be opened. ERTMS will mean fewer delays and cancellations.
There are currently fifteen different types of signalling systems implemented from the 1950s and onwards distributed among 330 stations in Norway.
“We currently implement a modern signalling system that will replace the various systems we have today. This will solidify the railway’s competitive edge by giving a more punctual, safe and environmentally-friendly railway”, says Sverre Kjenne, COO/CTO of Bane NOR.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility is impressed by the Norwegian strategy.
“By being the first country to implement the principle of “one country, one interlocking, one datacentre”, Bane NOR and Norway is the leader in railway digitalization”, says Michael Peter.
